The world’s first hydrogen-powered narrow-gauge railway is being developed on a research platform on the Zillertal train. The hydrogen driven powertrain for heavy-duty train applications will be evolved through extensive testing on an innovative fuel cell system test bed. After optimization of the fuel cell system under simulated real life conditions as Hardware in the Loop, the whole powertrain will be tested in an electric railcar from ZVB. During comprehensive real life testing on the narrow-gauge train track in the Zillertal acquisition of valuable know-how will further optimize the system performance and the overall powertrain. Additionally, a concept for a corresponding hydrogen refueling station for heavy-duty train applications will be developed.

The background of the project ist the strategy of Tyrol, becoming autonomous in matters of energy is on its way. Politics and economics are working step by step to achieve this goal with building up a green hydrogen economy.

The working group of HyWest – part of the Green Energy Center Europe in Innsbruck – is a strategic partner and catalyst when it comes to using green hydrogen as a bridge for the energy turnaround.
