In September 2024, the Tyrolean food retailer MPREIS marked a significant milestone in Austria’s sustainable transport sector by introducing a new Hyundai XCIENT Hydrogen-powered truck into regular operation at its facility in Völs. The truck was delivered by Hyundai through their Austrian partner JuVE AutoMotion and will replace the current Hyzone Hymax 250 model truck. This initiative is part of MPREIS’s broader strategy to decarbonize its logistics and contribute to climate goals.
MPREIS produces the green hydrogen used to power the truck at its own facility in Völs, which houses Europe’s largest single-stack electrolysis plant. The company has also established a state-of-the-art hydrogen refueling station on-site.
This development is part of the broader “WIVA P&G HyWest” project, a €23 million flagship research initiative funded by Austria’s Climate and Energy Fund. The project aims to establish a green hydrogen economy in Central Europe, with MPREIS’s efforts serving as a pioneering example. By integrating hydrogen technology into its logistics, MPREIS demonstrates a commitment to sustainable practices and positions itself at the forefront of Austria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
